At Bristol Ear Health, we provide professional ear wax removal in Bristol using microsuction — the safest and most effective method of ear cleaning available today. Our clinics in Kingswood and Bedminster offer quick, comfortable treatment for blocked ears, reduced hearing, tinnitus, ear discomfort, and excessive ear wax build-up.
Microsuction ear wax removal uses a gentle medical suction device alongside specialist magnification to carefully remove wax from the ear canal with precision. Unlike traditional ear syringing, microsuction does not introduce water into the ear, making it a safer option for many patients, including those with sensitive ears, previous ear infections, perforated eardrums, or hearing aids.
Most appointments are completed within minutes and many patients experience immediate relief and improved hearing following treatment.
Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by the ear canal to protect and lubricate the ears. It helps trap dust, bacteria, and debris while preventing irritation and infection.
In most people, ear wax naturally clears itself from the ear canal. However, some individuals are more prone to wax build-up due to:
When ear wax becomes impacted, it can lead to blocked ears, temporary hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness, discomfort, or earache. In these cases, professional ear wax removal is often recommended.
Microsuction is a modern ear cleaning procedure used to safely remove excess or impacted ear wax. During treatment, a clinician uses specialist magnification and a gentle suction device to remove wax directly from the ear canal with accuracy and control.
Microsuction is widely considered the gold-standard method of ear wax removal because it:
Many patients prefer microsuction because it is cleaner, more comfortable, and safer than traditional ear irrigation.
Your appointment begins with an examination of the ears using specialist equipment to assess the condition of the ear canal and identify any wax blockage.
If ear wax is present, microsuction is then carefully performed to remove the blockage safely and comfortably. Throughout the procedure, the ear canal is clearly visualised to ensure accurate treatment.
Most appointments take between 15–30 minutes depending on the amount and consistency of wax present.
Following treatment, many patients notice:
Microsuction is regarded as one of the safest methods of ear wax removal when carried out by trained professionals. Because the procedure does not involve flushing water into the ear canal, it is often suitable for patients who may not be appropriate for traditional ear syringing.
Microsuction may be particularly suitable for patients with:
At Bristol Ear Health, patient safety and comfort are our priority. All treatments are performed using professional equipment in a clinical environment.
Most patients find microsuction comfortable and quick. Some people may experience mild sensitivity depending on the condition of the ear canal or how impacted the wax is, but the procedure is generally very well tolerated.
You may hear some suction noise during treatment, which is completely normal. If the wax is particularly hard or deeply impacted, olive oil drops may be recommended before treatment to help soften the wax.
Hearing aid users are often more prone to ear wax build-up because hearing aids can reduce the ear’s natural ability to clear wax from the canal.
Excess wax can cause:
Regular ear wax removal can help hearing aids function properly and improve overall hearing clarity.
Following microsuction, most patients can immediately return to normal daily activities.
To help maintain healthy ears after treatment:
If you wear hearing aids or frequently experience blocked ears, routine ear examinations may help prevent future wax impaction.

Unsure whether you have earwax?
A gradual or sudden reduction in hearing can occur when excessive wax blocks the ear canal.
New ringing / buzzing or other noises in the ear may occur. If you already suffer with tinnitus your symptoms may worsen.
Ear wax impaction may cause discomfort or pain in the ear in the form of earache. A sudden episode of this without fever is common.
In some cases, earwax blockage can affect the inner ear, leading to balance issues.
A blockage can cause irritation and itching in the ear canal. If you suffer with this already, your symptoms will worsen.
The feeling that your ear is plugged or full is a common. You may also feel like your ear is full of water.

Earwax removal is a process of cleaning our ears of excessive earwax that has built up in our ear canals. There are a number of different methods used to try and do this including the preferred method of microsuction, ear syringing / irrigation or manual removal. Some people can also remove their earwax blockage by using over-the-counter ear drops.
See our earwax removal page for more information.
Microsuction is a professional earwax removal technique where a specialised microscope and a medical suction device is use to carefully vacuum out earwax. Unlikely ear syringing where water is injected into the ear canal creating unnecessary risk of injury and hearing damage. Microsuction is safe, effective and painfree. It is the only treatment technique we use at Bristol Ear Health and is the national recommended method of earwax extraction.

Oiling Process

You maybe tempted or advised to use other products such as Sodium Bicarbonate or OTEX Express. However, these products break the earwax down too much causing ear canal and ear drum smearing. This is extremely hard to remove. If you stick with olive oil we will to a much better job.
Everyone is different when it comes to earwax texture. Some require oiling and others don't. Unless we have stated otherwise, please oil your ears for 3 - 5 days before your appointment. This will help to soften your earwax perfectly.
This might sound trivial but by massaging your ears at the front and back simultaneously helps to move the earwax off your ear canal walls. This helps to reduce risk of discomfort when the earwax is removed.
Depending on your day to day activities you can choose to oil in the morning or before you go to bed. For those that wear hearing aids during the day it is recommended to oil in the evening before bed.
